Candid shots of children and animals are exciting as you never know what the moment will give you. But add to the equation the unpredictable force, speed and beauty of nature, in the form of a powerful wave ,on a stormy day and you have the makings of something very special.
I first became interested in surfing photography when I was taking shots of some of the children on the beach; watching their siblings and friends in the water. It wasn't long before, some of those children were wearing wet suits themselves, as they were waiting for their turn in the surf. And from the priceless shots of the children it was a natural progression to the older members of the surf classes and then onto the instructors themselves.
No matter the age of the surfer, the one constant , is a child-like energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment that is exhibited by my subjects. There's a certain amount of awe in the face of wave as well as the awe the viewer experiences, as people, with the aid of simple fiberglass board, harness the energy and master all that nature can throw at them.
I hope that my shots have captured not just the beauty but also that sense of awe and achievement each surfer experiences.
